2 boys charged with auto thefts arrested after crash in Arbutus
From the air and on the ground, the Regional Auto Theft Task Force tracked a pair of school-aged boys who Baltimore City police said stole a car and drove it around southwest Baltimore and into Baltimore County for hours.James Moss, who owns a body shop on South Warwick Avenue, said he is fed up, telling 11 News that the two boys — ages 12 and 13 — who were ultimately arrested didn’t just steal one car from his yard around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, as city police said. Moss said the boys stole two cars.”The vehicle we got from the shopping center, the right side is crashed. And, we were done with that. We were just waiting for the lady to pick it up to get paid. Now, we’re back to square one,” Moss said.Ross said the boys broke into his office, stole the keys and got away. Baltimore City police said the boys “recklessly drove around the Southwestern District” and crashed into someone’s car on South Monroe Street.”There’s a lot of vehicles being stolen, the doors are being opened, the gates are being ripped off and the young kids are stealing these cars. It’s no one older. This is young kids, though. So we’re going to need some help down here. All the help we can get. I mean, we can deal with older people, but these young kids? You can’t even touch him. If you see them in your car, what are you going to do? What can you say?” Moss said.Then, according to Baltimore County police, there was a child behind the wheel of a stolen blue, two-door Honda going back and forth across the city-county line for three hours until it crashed at 12:27 p.m. in the 4300 block of Southwestern Boulevard near Connect Avenue in Arbutus.County police and witnesses said the boys bailed while the car was still moving, tried to run and were arrested after a foot chase.”I don’t know what they were thinking and how far they thought they would have (fled), especially with a helicopter following you and police vehicles following you. Like, it’s just bizarre,” said Erica Garnett, a witness. “I guess they got scared because they realized that the police was closing in. So, they tried to escape the fastest way they probably knew, which was just to run.”City police made the arrests, taking the boys into custody. City officials said the boys were formally charged as juveniles with auto theft, unauthorized use and various traffic-related offenses. They have since been released.
